About Redhorse |
Red Horse is an old man that believes in anarchy. In the story of Grendel , Red Horse attempts to help Hrothulf overthrow the current government. While talking about overthrowing the king, Red Horse exclaims to Hrothulf, "What does a kingdom pretend to do? Save the values of the community-regulate compromise-Improve the quality of the commonwealth!" (Gardner 118). We see in this quote that Red Horse believes that the government pretends to take care of its' citizens. Since Red Horse is against the idea of leaving a government he would align with political nihilism. Another example of Red Horse being a political nihilist falls on page 119 when he says, "The state is an organization of violence, a monopoly in what it is pleased to call legitimate violence." (Gardner, 119). Again, this shows that Red Horse is against law and organization and is for political nihilism.
